Did a search and didn't find a discussion thread on eBrandon regarding a recall on air exchangers some years past. I'll post this just in case someone has one of these models and didn't know about the recall. Mine was i:ncluded in the recall, but I don't think the info was very well announced to the public. The recall is regarding some units catching fire and damaging houses. The recall surprisingly i:ncludes several brands including major brands sold in Brandon. Please find more info at the link.

The problems with Venmar goes back too much earlier models. We put one in our house when we built it in 1988. About 12 years later we noticed the air hard a strange smell to it. Never heard from anyone about a recall back then and purchased a new motor from the company to keep the unit working, we are now on our third motor, and so where along the way did read about the recalls on the newer models.  
The motor is a prelubricated unit and likely would have run forever if it had been placed in the unit to run horizontally not vertically, over time the motor would wear the thrust waher on the end of the motor and it would overheat, which you could smell when the unit was running.  
Just my opinion, but a pretty poor effort in our country to notify and protect those who purchased these products, there was a much better effort put forth by our neighbours to the south.

What if you are a renter and you have the venmar avs 41500? How long I wonder does the landlord have to change it.. it says to unplug immediately and now I’m worried my attached neighbours will accidentally start a fire :o if theirs is still plugged in

Not giving advice, but this is what I would do in your position.  
1. I would unplug the unit.  
2. I would talk to my landlord and inform him of the recall. Between you and the landlord decide who will contact Venmar to obtain the fix. The fix is a "3amp" fusible ac plug adapter. No technician required, very easy fix for anyone.  
3. If not already done, I would inform my neighbour about the recall so he/she knows about it.

I have one of these units as well. It's been running great since about 2012. I had no idea about the recall, just talked to the company and they're sending me the part. Thank you very much for the heads up.

According to the list ours is on there. Called today and someone is calling us next week to confirm.
