I'm wanting to build a garage and am putting a 10'wide by 8'high door and will have an automatic opener. I would like to have a 9' foot wall?? or do I need a 10' wall to have enough room for the automatic opener?

9Ft. ceiling for an 8Ft. door would be a tight squeeze for an opener. Might be able to do it. I'd go 10Ft.

You can do it with a 9’ ceiling height they have a different rail to accommodate it. You will love the extra height of a 10’ ceiling though and if possibly I would recommend that. Lumber would cost the same as you can’t buy 9’ boards. Unless you are building on a grade beam.

You are getting a traditional ceiling mounted opener, the minimum height is around 9’3”. You can get what is called a “low headroom kit” but if you are building new, I would not recommend that. If you get a direct drive wall mounted opener you will need at least that, preferably a little more because of the slope required on the horizontal portion of the track. Either way, at least 9’6” should be adequate for hanging supports.

An 8-foot high door requires 12 inches of headroom to accommodate standard garage door tracks & operator rail. More room does not hurt, but it is not required in this case.
