sewer smell from drain in laundry room

Occasionally smell a wiff in the house but the drain itself just reeks. We have poured hot water in the vent on the roof & poured water in the drain itself in case the trap was dry. any other suggestions before i have to call a plumber? We moved into this house 2 years ago and this is the first time we have problems with the odor.
