Just been doing some research on pellet stoves. Currently on propane but looking for other ways to supplment heat for winters. Something like a pellet stove seems like its a good option. Anyone out there with one? Thoughts??

we have one. Its not a really a cheaper heating source, especially if your using it as your primary source. The pellets are roughly $5-6 per bag and we go through a bag every 2 days on average. But we also have electric baseboards running so it isn't our primary heating. It is definitely a nice heat though, and no smoke smell to go with it. Watch though if you do get one, your insurance does go up quite a bit. Get it WETT inspected and it goes down some but still a good hike on your costs. Overall we enjoy ours on the real cold days, but last winter we hardly used it at all. Would I install another one in a different house? probably not, but we have it now so we use it lol.

.......understand why your insurance would go up a whole bunch. They are safe and efficient with a small amount of material actually burning at any given time. The bags are expensive if bought retail a few at a time but can often be purchased in bulk which would decrease the cost by as much as $2.00 -- $3.00 a bag.  
 
We used it as our primary heat source for a few years and had good results especially when compared to the price we were paying for oil.  
 
There is even a locally made pellet stove that is automatic and can be operated through your thermostats. If you google ELF industries you will find their information.

Where are u getting them for $2-3 per bag? I usually buy a pallet of 50 at a time and cheapest I found was $4.69. Id buy from these others for that price for sure!! Do you know what brand/where from? Our insurer told us that it's still classed somewhat as a wood stove. I argued the same point that it's a controlled feed am flame with safety measures in place much like a gas furnace. Ours was a 20% increase with 15% after wett inspection. That wa the cheapest we could find for insurance.

.....pallets of pellets and split amongst 3 people. I believe it was out of a place in / near St.Claud, MB. It was definitely the way to go.  
 
I was also able to pick them up with a flat deck on my own so that helped with the cost as well.  
 
We now use an electric forced air furnace as our primary heat source and using the pellet stove only on occasion. It is still nice to have running now and again.  
 
The increase to our insurance was minimal. Perhaps it was due to timing? We have had a pellet stove in our home for over ten years.
