We need to replace our 10 yr old shingles since apparently the manufacturers were trying to make them by using less petroleum products in them at that time, or so im told. What are the best shingles for our climate right now ? Its not cheap to redo the roofing, so 10 years is not enough.

Timberline are the best ashalt shingles. Thier tar line sticks and the quality of shingles is good. Do not go black or charcoal if you can avoid it as they seem to absorb the heat more and lessen the life of the shingle. DO NOT go BP or IKO in my knowledgable opinion!

35 year shingles. Just absolute garbage. Based on cost and convenience, I am inclined to move towards a metal roofing. I know they are not free of their issues either.  
Oddly enough, I put an American made shingle on my garage and they look like new even 10 years later. Granted, they may not be exposed to the same conditions of the roof on my home, but I sure wonder about the quality of the premium shingles I had installed on my home.

Is it also possible that the problem was with the original installation? There are shady contractors in this town.

is whati have, thats also a favorite reason from then that the shingles were not installed correctley, we just went through a tornado in the last couple of months and none blew off, so id say thats not the reason, south side looks worse but when i got up on the roof and had a check, it is all in bad shape.Not sure where they will go for insurande, but will try. Where to buy the the timberline ones ?

North American double check however Home Depot carries them about 25.00 a bundle which is a good competitive price. I am not sure of the other lumber yard, as the two I mentioned are the most popular price point.

is whats on the roof now, i dont know what the origonal ones were but they were on there since 1988 and were changed in 04 because they got hailed on, otherwise they were still ok, when the IKO were installed there was a total of 8 vents installed on the house and garage roof, so ventilation should be better , not sure but they look like their 40 years old not the actual 10 or 11.

I also have roofed for years. Asphalt shingles were rated for 10, 15 or lifetime. Basically the difference was the thickness of the shingle a reflective of the amount of tar and grit. All companies have recognized that asphalt/tar melts in heat. Where attic is poorly vented or sun shines directly in afternoon or the colour is darker the lift is shorter. Anyone wanting warrantee from company have to be very persistent. Some of my customers have gotten a little most have not.  
 
In my opinion the best shingles are Iko Cambridge. They have a tar line on the bottom of the shingles. They stick well. Bp Mystic has two tar lines on the top of shingles. What I have noticed is if either is old stock grit falls off eve as you are installing.  
 
Timberline is sold by Home Depot brush are thinner. We tore several during installation if we didn't handle them carefully. You decide

I've sold them for years with very few callbacks. Now BP Harmony 35yr, that's a different story, constant troubles. not sealing and blowing off mainly. But inconsistent color, fading, premature aging, brittleness, etc.

BP building products had a bad bunch of shingles about 12 or 13 years ago.There was a civil law suit against them and you had to make a claim. You could do this by going on line and getting a claim form,and taken a bunch of photos and submitting them to the company.

BP had so many issues with Harmony brand they now sell Mystic. They were not all bad. Quality varied each lift. The good ones would seal on their own often. After an hour on roof they tabbed. If not someone had to take a tar gun and tab entire roof.  
 
I have used Mystic on several job this year without ANY issues. BP seems to have solved their production problem.  
 
I had one problem with Cambridge this yeagr. The customer bought from a smaller lumber yard and I suspect they were old stock.  
 
 
I am told both companies are discontinued production of the traditional three tab  
Some shingle failure is do to installation by idiots. We reshingled some roofs that were hail damaged. No or inconsistent underpayment Eave guard was installed without the backing removed so it held water rotting roof.  
 
For the record South End Lumber supplies good quality product and good service too.

How do you choose the colour of shingles? I've heard that you should choose a colour that will complement the house. Does dark coloured shingles negatively affect how long they last or increase costs bc of getting hotter in sun?

Cambridge. IKO Dynasty if you want higher quality.  
I have put Cambridge on the last two homes I have lived in without any trouble.
