2x12 Lumber

Is there anywhere locally that sells 2 inch x 12 inch lumber? I haven't had any luck with the stores I've contacted, but maybe I'm missing someone. I can find it in Winnipeg with no problem, but I don't want to drive all the way there for just a few boards.

Have you tried South End Lumber?

I have usually had luck getting from them.

McMunn & Yates, and Windsor Plywood sometimes has it as well.

They have all gone mainstream now and carry only basics from what I have seen. North American was good, but I am fairly certain they are closed now. Maybe South End Lumber?

The last few times I needed anything that wasn't a popular size I have ordered in from Winnipeg. Heck, I can't even get decent quality 1 x 6 in town half the time.

That most stores don't carry 12" deep product because at that depth of structural lumber most applications can be done more cost effectively and efficiently using engineered lumber products such as Microllam LVL or engineered lumber I-joists. If you ask a professional in the stores they may be able to give you alternatives to using 2x12 structural lumber.

That makes sense. The reason I'm looking for a 2x12 is just to re-tread our stairs. We want a solid piece of wood that we can stain and varnish instead of two or more pieces put together. Since the step is 9 1/2 inches deep, a 2x10 is not wide enough to do that.

use what is available and then veneer the top to get the profile you want. Veneer would also give you alternatives in wood species to give different architectural appearances. Veneers would mean a nosing. Another option is to put out an eBrandon ad to see if you can find some reclaimed rough sawn fir that can be made into solid stair treads

I've gotten 2x12 from them in the past. For a set of stairs I'm building now, I'm using 2 plies of 3/4" plywood as the treads. When complete, no joints visible from above, and the nosing covers the edges. Ensure there is a generous layer of glue between the two plies. Better than a 2x12, as it won't warp.

Has 2X12 in 16ft lengths.

you can also buy wood stair veneers that are 3/4" think if you like, we ended up doing that with ours as it was most cost effective, built the stair case normally and then glued the premade veneers on and stained them was cheaper then making them myself at the time anyway
