We are looking for ideas on where we can find moving boxes and any advice that you have for a family looking to move for the first time. Any helpful hints would be appreciated

Try get boxes all the same size with lids as they stack better that way. Label everything with the room it belongs in and whether or not it is fragile. Pack things you won't be using early to get a head start. If you get possession while you are in your current place, take a box or 2 every time you go over and put it in its place. If you have small kids, move their stuff into their rooms first - toys, beds, so they have 'their place' in the new home first and it won't feel as chaotic for them. You can get boxes at the liquor stores, Staples also sells banker boxes but they can be pricey. Good time to put an ad on e-Brandon looking for used moving boxes as we just had the end of the month so people would have just moved. Just be organized, don't leave things till last minute and if you have movers coming, take your valuables with you so the movers won't have to deal with them.

If you're not wanting to pay for the boxes ..dollarama on 18 has a bin on its north said strictly for their boxes, the mgr there is great just ask and they don't mind. If you want actual moving boxes too you can go directly to the Canada moving depot in the east end and they sell them. Lysa 65 had great advice on the setting up part

For dishes and breakables, wrap them in your kitchen and bathroom towels. Gives good protection and cuts down on that dirty old newspaper you have to get rid of after unpacking.  
Instead of emptying dresser drawers, leave the clothes in and just tape the drawers shut.  
For clothes in the closet, leave them on the hangers and put them in garment/dry cleaner bags.

Agree with catman....use sheets, towels, pillowcases etc for wrapping fragile items. You can also just use garbage bags to wrap the clothes and yes, leave on hangers! You can reuse the bags when your done.

CDC Delivery offers rental of reusable plastic moving totes and lids, check them out in the moving and storage section of the classifieds.

I wouldn't be leaving the drawers full of clothes in your dressers, it makes them very heavy and hard to move. Take the drawers out and stack them one on top of the next.  
 
Other than that lots of good advice.

on 18th St North has great boxes from their jeans.. nice heavy duty ones. Stop in and ask.  
 
 
Make sure your boxes close if you have someone helping you move. Makes it much easier for stacking. If it's for a in town move...check out Jamie's truck for hire...reasonable rates & efficient movers. 204-724-2590
