Last year there were a lot of black ants (carpenter ants??) in my apartment. Winter passed and now they are back, and LOTS of them too... I thought it was my fault, so I clean my apartment top to bottom, under beds, behind the fridge, I cleaned EVERYTHING multiple times over.... They are still EVERYWHERE! I find them in our bed, on the ceiling, on the walls, crawling everywhere, it is so gross, and I'm not sure what to do... I understand ants are among the species that we have to deal with here in canada, BUT this is getting ridiculous.... Any advice? I have 2 young children and I would prefer not to have all these ants crawling everywhere... It's an older apartment, so could that be the problem? I'm not sure why they are here as I'm very careful to put food away and clean up... Any advice? They are mostly found in the wall connecting my apartment to the next, and they keep coming out near the door of the closet there.... Help please!!! So gross... Thankyou on advance for your answers

Had that problem years ago and had to call them to spray.  

I once lived in an apartment in an old brick building. I had problems with ants as well. It wasn't until I visited an elderly neighbor across the hall to help her clean one day that I found the source of their affection. There were ants like you wouldn't believe in her apartment. It got worse when I opened a cupboard door. It was black in there. They were eating all sorts of unsealed foods. All my apartment needed was to be in close proximity.  
 
We have also had ants in our house. When problems happened, it was due to a scout ant finding candy wrappers (and candy) in our kids' room. This happened twice. Otherwise we might find the odd ant here and there. We kill them and there are no issues...but I suspect that if they are really bad at your place, that they are accessing something (food) hidden by kids somewhere inside or they are finding a food source close to the building.

go to Poulin's for advice, they have some products you may be able to use or else get them to exterminate those yucky ants.

Black ants are bad outside my house in the spring, then I buy a ten pack of those round ant traps, throw them by all the places I see them and that takes care of them till halfway through summer then another ten pucks takes care of them until the snow flies. Cheap easy and effective  
 
 
I also used to use them in the apartment I had as a teenager. They are fairly safe for around children, I wouldn't say baby safe but a kid that is told not to play with them should be okay.  
 
Did I mention cheap?

We are in a townhouse type of building and we use this every year. Works really well. We just spray it around the outside of the building and under each doorway etc. where they may try to crawl in the building. Reapply if it rains. We have also put the traps inside that they talk about above but find the spray stops them from even trying to get into our apartment.

If the link doesn't work its called Home Defense and we get it at Canadian Tire for about $10.00 a bottle. Usually lasts all year and then some!

We had a bad any problem in our home last year as crazy as it sounds we used baby powder. But baby down wherever they come in. In our case it was our doors we put it along the door frame and it worked
