Removing old carpet underlay

We are renovating part of our house and we are trying to remove the old carpet. Is there any easy way to get the old underlay off? We are trying to scrape it off but not making much progress. Someone suggested soaking it with a water and dish soap solution but that won't work either. The carpet is over 35 years old so it's been there for awhile. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

rents an electric floor scraper that can be used on concrete and wood subfloor will make the task alot easier

no expert but I used an heavy duty ice scraper to remove most of it

Jenkins carpet warehouse staff are exceptional and have always been able to offer excellent advice. Call them, if there is an efficient way to do it they will know.

Flooring installer here so I can tell you how we do it. If it is on concrete which you fighting with it tells me. We just rip all the lose stuff and remove any glued parts with a razor scraper. Like a wallpaper scraper or something sharp and flat. Works like a charm every time

If it is on cement, I have used an angle grinder with a wire cup brush. 1100 sq ft in less than 15 minutes. Wear a dust mask, it makes a pile of dust, most likely none that you should inhale.
