Just wondering where in town I could rent a carpet cleaner for cheap. My apartment carpets need to be done pretty badly, but I have a pretty tight budget.

By the time you rent the machine, buy the chemical and do he work yourself, it's not cost effective and the results are not as good as the pros. Call Barrie Wood Carpet, you can get a lot done for their minimum charge of $75. www.barriewoodcarpet.ca

I would also recommend getting your carpet cleaned as a service or, despite your budget, purchasing a carpet cleaner by one of the major vacuum manufactures - they are not perfect but they clean better than the rentals. In fact the rentals can be quite damaging to some carpets!

We just rented one from superstore last weekend. It costed us 50$ soap i:ncluded and it actually works very well.

We rent one twice a year from Home Depot. It's cheaper I believe if you rent for the evening and return it in the am. (probably true at any place). You keep the soap so can use it again as it's a big jug. I would prefer to rent than own one as they have better suction and I don't have to pay to maintain or replace. I'm sure hiring a company does a better job but this is cost effective for us.

You could also ask your landlord if they have you can borrow. A lot of landlords own one simply because they often have carpets to do and it's more cost-effective to just buy one. If you're a good tenant with a good relationship with your landlord, they might let you use it, especially if it's because you're trying to take care of the place.  
 
Or just ask around. Lots of people own one (I do), and maybe a friend of a friend would let you borrow theirs.
