I know stucco is cheaper but I like the look of vinyl. What's in now? Which is better?

Prefer hardie, vinyl warps from our intense climate in the summer and gets very brittle in the winter. If you want the look of vinyl try getting it done in steel instead although then you struggle with dents

havent priced it out in a while but i thought stucco was more then vinyl also better, stucco is more permanent, vinyl can warp let bugs and critters in ect but its cheap and looks ok and you can dyi it easily so there are advantages, whats in IDK but i would consider what you like and value in looks, price, durability ect to decide, not what the general public likes, unless you're planning to sell asap or something

I have a house from the mid 1970s that has stucco and vinyl siding. Both are holding up well. The stucco has some minor cracks that can be fixed.  
 
Wash the dirt off twice a year and you'll be fine with either. It's personal preference.

I thought if you have cracks in your stucco, it is not easily fixed (cannot patch)? I also thought lots of insurance companies do not like insuring homes that have cheap stucco (acrylic) in my opinion, I like vinyl sidings … I think your house will look better and sell quicker *if you were*

With all products, there are cheap, middle and higher end.  
 
Had a bad stucco job, have seen warped renovator vinyl siding and have been recommended cement fibre board siding.  
 
Also depends whether it's your lifetime home for the investment of a good quality product.  
 
Do your research and hire a good contractor.

Not a lover of Stucco. I installed vinyl on my house 19 years ago when I built.  
 
Vinyl comes in various grades. Initially hired a contractor to side my house. Have several cracks from shovels leaning against it in winter. We had hail which pounded two sides. I resided in vinyl but ended up with lowered quality.  
 
Not sure what product to side but WILL NOT use vinyl again. Harbours flies. Cracks and faded. Watching this thread with interest. Leaning toward Hardie board or cement board.

is CanXel siding. It's a tough siding that resists denting and fading. Pricewise, it falls between vinyl and cement board. If it becomes faded over time it is paintable. I've found that it takes many years to have it fade at all and even then, only in direct sunlight.

I think you might be confusing Vinyl siding with Hardie /cement board siding. Hardie siding is comparable in price I believe to stucco so would just be personal prefecence on looks. I don't see one being better durabilty or quality wise.  
Vinyl siding on the other hand is a lower end cheaper material.
