wondering if anyone has had a wood stove installed in their home lately and a rough estimate of the install costs, as well as costs of stove and pipe

anything regarding the costs, however i suspect it important to ensure it is a CSA approved stove, installed by a qualified installer and contact your insurance company regarding the install and unit.  
 
they will likely want a WETT inspection on it in order to maintain coverage on your house.

I bought a used stove and chimney, knowing both the stove and chimney needed to have acceptable stickers showing then meet cdn standards. I then downloaded manufactures installation specs and did the install myself. Dont light the stove until it has been wett certified a 400 cost. Once done paperwork gets sent into your insurance company for approval. Once approved you are good to go. It added 10-15% to my property insurance annually. In my case that was about 400/ year so decide if its worth it before you make the purchase. I was prepared for the cost. Not happy with it but its the cost to enjoy the stove.

If you put in a zero clearance fireplace, it does not affect your insurance.

You are wrong with your info ZachT. I have zero clearance and my insurance did go up. I question why your insurance would not go up when you add a liability.

For us cost was more than savings so we took ours out and invested in a better furnace

My insurance went up, but not enough to make much a difference

Really depends on what type of stove or fireplace. They can be under a 1000 or 10k and everywhere between. The install and materials will run you a 2-3 thousand on top of the stove/fireplace.  
 
Unless you have free wood the payback is not great on a wood stove. Really nice to save a bit and have a back up heat source when you need though.

wood burners are what the insurance companies dont like. they were installed by anyone, the chimneys are out dated, they have creosote build up and potential chimney fires.  
 
free standing gas and gas inserts are much easier with the insurance companies.  
 
not sure about the wood pellet and log stoves.

I have asked at Guild and they told me that a zero clearance fireplace would not change my premiums whereas a wood stove would. There would be a change due to the increase in value of the house though.

Whatever you do, don't use Krevco. They installed a fireplace that has a leaking chimney and they won't do anything about it

what's the difference between wood burning and logs? (Aren't logs wood)?

My insurance went up $150-200 when I got my stove insured. Did it all myself and got the WETT inspection and he was quite impressed with my job. Not many insurance companies like to cover stoves these days but not all of them are expensive.

For the question about the difference between wood burning stoves and pellet stoves the difference could be in the rate of burn if the fuel. If you throw a log into a stove the log does not burn up in a short order of time, the smouldering of the wood creates chemicals that condensate in the stovepipe and create a situation of a fuel that can burn later as a chimney fire. In a pellet stove you are using a small source of fuel in a continuous burn and a very quick burn, relatively speaking, that leads to very efficient burn, lessening the chance of a fire as well as a low exhaust temperature.  
 
Now these are just ideas of mine that could be 100% wrong.

The pipe twists together and seals. It is strange the it is your pipe.
