Custody and communication

I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to handle distance between a child and a parent after separation. Obviously custody is one thing but with technology these days, how much communication between child and parent while they're apart is enough? Like FaceTime, messages, snapchat, that kind of thing. If it was your kid, would you be making an effort every day in some form or another?
Side note, this other parent has been away working and hasn't seen his child in months. Am I wrong to expect an effort made consistently? Am I wrong to think that a 5-10 minute call every couple days isn't enough?
