first you complained that hockey was cancelled after only a few games due to covid 19 restrictions.

now they have opened up hockey so kids can get out there and have some fun and exercise.

instead of being grateful, you are now complaining that they have to wear masks on and off the ice.

Duh covid 19 is still around. Be glad hockey has started up again.

I was never a hockey parent: do all of you complain about something all the time? I hope not.

Not a very good example for your kids.

This will be a bit of a cross post with the vacation post, but a lot of the same points to make.

It’s a tough time for everyone and you’ve gotta be careful not to paint everyone with the same brush. Easy to confuse folks who simply want this to be over so they can safely enjoy something they love the way they know they can with those who think they know better than the decision makers that are trying to get us to the finish line.

Hope too many aren’t confusing the low case numbers to mean that we’re through to the other side yet. Variants that spread more willingly are for real and seem to be minimally detected in this province so far. The last thing we want is for us to have come this far to get numbers low only to slip and let it dig back in. With the delay between when cases appear and when we know about them we don’t have the luxury of turning the switch on and off at a moments notice when needed. Vaccine volumes are ramping up, the end is in sight and I trust decision-makers to know when that time is here. Until then it’s gotta be a little more “short term pain for long term gain!”

I would caution anyone to judge the whole of hockey parents by the worst examples. Not all are indignant with rage over the new regulations, and I think a lot accept that the goal here is to get the kids back on the ice without putting their health at risk.

It would take a special kind to be upset that the Province and sanctioning bodies (Hockey Manitoba, etc) want their children to be safe.

You always get the conspiracy nuts, or those that are just uninformed on the science and the seriousness of COVID-19 (for example, quoting WHO articles that are over a year old).

Personally, I think re-opening sports is a mistake, but I don't have skin in the game, so it's hard to argue with the passion. First priority, as always, should be safety.

I am happy that hockey practices have been able to start up again and that at least one of my kids is able to take part (the rest miss out because their team has no ice to play on, many rural rinks had to take their ice out already).

I am NOT happy that the kids have to wear masks on the ice, or that anyone has to wear one during physical activity. It goes directly against advice on the WHO website which states:

‘FACT: People should NOT wear masks while exercising.
People should NOT wear masks when exercising, as masks may reduce the ability to breathe comfortably.
Sweat can make the mask become wet more quickly which makes it difficult to breathe and promotes the growth of microorganisms. The important preventive measure during exercise is to maintain physical distance of at least one meter from others.’

I have emailed Dr Roussin, Premier Pallister and my MLA asking if they can offer an explanation as to why they feel it necessary to go against advice from the WHO, but won’t hold my breath waiting for a response.

You can choose to not participate if you are against the current rules for indoor sports. Like we have.

Spring outdoor sports are starting up real soon. Very little restrictions for outdoor organized sports.

Some people just have to make up for lost time and do anything to get the kids playing hockey again.

Yes of course it is my choice, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t expect public health officials to explain why they are going against the advice of the WHO.
