Weaning

The breastfeeding thread got me thinking about this. I have an 18 month old who was a premie. I strictly bf until 6 mos of age when he started some solids. However, I've made the mistake of nursing him to sleep and can't seem to kick the habit. He will go to sleep for my mother and husband, but these people are not always around and he only wants his mommy if I'm around. I'm ready to be done this and don't subscribe to the 'crying it out' method. I've read some books but have had no luck. Letting him stay up until he conks out is not much of an answer as he's been known to stay up until 1am and I need to work in the morning. His naps, routines and all else are regular. Help!!
Oh and he doesn't take to a bottle anymore.
