I thought this was a strange piece in the WFP. Students who deserve to be suspended should be suspended. Of all the topics that should be discussed with respect to education, I felt this article was a waste of space.  
 
Does the month of January lead to more suspensions? Who knows?

Can you tell us what the article is about? because I can`t view the article because I don't have a subscription to the Winnipeg Free Press.

There is one interesting comment within the report.This is a statement by Sefton, basically he is saying, that it's the higher grades and not 1's and 2's that are causing the upheaval. Well one would expect maybe some disruption, coming from the entry grades, but really the 7 & 8's should know better. Clearly they don't who is that down to?

most grades 1 & 2s are busy but not bad kids, they also get a bit more leeway as kids older then 12, just as you said kids older the 12 know better, or we think they do, the thing is they are testing the boundaries and their brains aren't really developed yet a while the have a ton of puberty hormones surging and are getting wise to the systems and life's inconsistencies, some have been bullied for years and some have bad home lives, not making excuses at all because the consequences should still be there but at the same time it makes perfect sense that suspensions and issues are in the higher grades

Children were assaulted in Brandon schools and suspensions were handed out.

Verbal and emotional abuse of students should evoke this response too. Swift concequences and no fooling around.  
 
I am not at all a believer in harsh, rash decisions when it comes to disciplining any child, age 7 or age 13. The details of any 'situation' that arises need to be acquired from those involved and any by-standers. Fairness, empathy and patience need to be practiced by teachers/principal/administration when figuring out what happened. And if someone is a bully, aggressive, disrespectful and out of control, verbally or physically or emotionally THEN GET IT DONE.  
 
And whether the fault for the behaviour lies with the parents or whoever, the Division has to deal with it if that behavior occurred in Brandon schools. Good for them. Less tolerance, more concequence.

I think it's very good. I hope this means the School Divisions are actually taking their own mandate of "Bullying will not be tolerated" seriously!

I guess things have changed since I was a kid back in the 90's. My first suspension in school was in grade 3(one day) and I remembered kids getting suspended earlier than that. Honestly I think it's a good thing there handing suspensions out to kids of all ages in the school system. It teaches them that there's consequences for their actions. Hopefully lessons will be learnt.

Oh, Sorbet. You never disappoint. If there is anything that remotely smacks of an attack on the education system, you never fail to launch the first strike. I can only imagine the trauma you experienced as a child.

I experienced no trauma as a child: but thanks for your immature concern.  
 
I'm not sure where in my OP I was attacking the education system, but I guess you found something to fabricate.  
 
Maybe you're a BSD employee and feel the system is perfect. That's your opinion and your welcome to it.  
 
I said suspensions are a good thing. Not sure what you were reading. I hope you have a better day tomorrow. All the best!  

I may be showing my age, but is there such a thing as Detention as a corrective behaviour measure?  
 
Not at all suggesting Suspensions are not warranted, but is this the only option the schools have left to maintain an orderly environment?

That this is noticed but maybe it's a good thing. I know that in many school divisions so called zero tolerance seemed more like zero if we can make it stick tolerance. Times change, bullying doesn't so much. Kids need consistency to learn. And parents need to know constructive criticism of their children is okay.

There is zero tolerance in schools for violence or aggression, what other recourse is there other than to suspend. I am glad that the school division takes any kind of aggression seriously
