Wanting a 2nd hand decent Guitar...where do I look?

I took lessons on a basic guitar and it was not a good scene.
Im now ready to take up the Guitar again, but I don't want to spend a fortune on it , or any expensive lessons as I may still not have the skills.
So I want to plunk away on a decent instrument to practice, but I can't break the bank.
What do I look for in a second hand guitar and are there any self-taught lessons a person can let me know about?
I just want to plunk away....
