SuperheroAmongYou said "Okay ( excuse my ignorance ), so if I keep all my receipts, then come tax time I file them under provincial tax credits? I do my own taxes because they are as basic as they come, but I'm thinking next year I'll get someone to do them so I don't screw it up.
I haven't kept receipts of anything really because I kept getting told I claim anything....darn.... is there a way I can prove my spending without having their receipts? "
Our tax software has something called a "comprehensive interview method" that literally asks you about every. single. credit. Time consuming (not really, it takes about 10-15 minutes), but that way nothing gets missed.
If you use tax preparation software, see if it has something like that. That way, you can be more confident that you haven't missed anything.
If you do find/get old receipts reprinted, you can ask the CRA for an adjustment to have them i:ncluded on prior returns for up to 3 years after they are filed. Right now we're filing the 2019 return, so you can go back to the 2016 tax year (which was filed in 2017) to have things reassessed.
