I have done the adopt a family through my work place where you purchase a Christmas dinner, snacks (you are given a list but can buy extra) and a few small gifts for the family.
Last year we took the kids out of school and delivered hampers for an afternoon. We found it a good lesson as you had to knock on their door, deliver the hamper etc so got to meet the families. You could volunteer to help wrap or organize the hampers as well.
We always pick a childs name (usually pick the same age and gender as our own children) and buy a gift for that child.
You could also volunteer to help prepare or serve the dinner.
There is also operation Christmas child where you purchase small gift items for boxes that are sent to over seas children.
