To the folk who question unschooling or home schooling i give you this to ponder. Besides reading and writing when have you ever had to use algebra in your day to day lives, or had to disect a frog, or know how to use a protractor. There is nothing i could not teach a k - 8 student that he/she wouldnt need to get by in their day to day lives.
Most of the schooling today is all filler, in college and university i felt, and believe me this is just my opinion, but i felt that through the courses i took i could have taken most of them with a "Grade 8" education.
To the nay sayers i also feel that the only reason you feel so strongly is because the way the world is today. you turn 5 "you are supposed" to start kindergarten, you turn 18 are supoposed to graduate highschool because it has become the "Standard" for education. Most children that arent held back by the grade system and have the freedom to burn through courses at their leisure can if determined enough easily finish highschool faster than a student in the PSS.
Someone mentioned that the PSS is like a prison, and after working in the BSD, i can wholeheartedly agree that in some degree's it is. The fact alone that children have ask to use the bathroom is ludacris. If i had to use the bathroom and my boss told me that i had to wait, and i messed my drawers there would be serious repercussions for that decision.
Also someone mentioned that courtesy and politness were not being held up in our schooling today is absolutley true, and I believe the real problem that Manitobans should reflect upon is the reality that parents today have to both work full time jobs and sometimes even a second job to stay afloat. This does not give the parents the time they need to teach their children the P's and Q's as my mother would say. 50 years ago it was very uncommon for both parents to have to work, people got by on one income and did well for themselves. With both parents working public school is the only place where "free" child care is offered. Were it possible that a parent were able to stay at home with the children i dont see why Unschooling couldnt be an option.
