I am an older female, near retirement, but still need to work, however when I apply for jobs, I never receive a response, for instance, BRHA is one: there is a question on the external application which asks if I would like to self identify as FN or Metis, which I do, and now I'm wondering if that is what is hindering me from getting a job there.  
Anyone else have any recommendations or experiences with BRHA? Or is it my age that is hindering me? I feel I still have a lot to contribute, and I am actively looking for jobs, I have my own vehicle and license, but I'm starting to wonder if age/race discrimination is a factor.  
 
I've also been checking Indeed, ebrandon and other websites and applying when I feel a job is right for me. I did think about returning to school to further my education but I feel at my age it wouldn't be feasible.

I do in fact think age is the issue. I'm having the same problem. Have applied for many jobs which I know I’m qualified for and rarely get a response. I have received help with my resume and used different versions. Still no response. I also think that the fact that applying is done online is a hindrance as no one ever meets a real person.

Here is my thoughts:  
 
Applying from the outside is very hard as they will always hire internally first before taking applications from the outside…. Brandon gets ALOT of applications - one can assume…. Lots of the jobs I’ve seen filled in Brandon are actual people who got their foot in the door from other hospitals, and then transferred when they had a bit more seniority . I’ve seen it happen numerous times. Brandon would be very very hard to actually get into with a position. My advise to getting in with PMH would be to either:  
a) try an out of town hospital in the department that you are wanting. Chances of getting hired where there is less competition is always better out of Brandon…however , since you are retiring soon, then that doesn’t make much sense as the effort would be a bit futile if your leavening soon…  
Or b) apply as “casual”. Though you don’t actually build seniority with a casual position (which doesn’t really matter since you are retiring soon anyway) but you should get shifts as casual can be very busy… I would also maybe apply for casual in a number of departments, like dietary aid and housekeeping. Or laundry and housekeeping . Or all 3. That way you are on many different call out lists…  
 
HOWEVER, and I will say this frankly. PMH in Brandon gets ALOT of applications, and honestly speaking your age would probably have some sway in their decision… as the choice between a 20-something tiny-bopper that is looking for a long term deal would (im assuming) be a first choice than someone who is going to be leaving in the near future….

There are a ton of openings with Prairie Mountain Health in all communities. Start throwing in your application. I was hired on in January and I am 58. I don’t believe they discriminate based on age. If you are willing to work, you will find something if that’s where you want to be.

Regarding applying to PMH, I'd suggest applying for a casual position and then make yourself very available to work. It's a great way to get your 'foot in the door'. From there you may get onto something more permanent.

Not sure if this is something suitable for you, but look up "Brandon Community Options Inc.". It is a non-profit agency committed to improving the quality of life for people who have been described as having a mental handicap by providing them with a home and a life in their community. Some people live in group homes and others live semi-independently in apartments.... (this is quoted from their website).  
 
I know there are a few other privately-owned businessess in Brandon that take care of adults living on their own, but I do not know their business name. Hope this helps.
