Does anybody have any recommendations for good books for someone who isn't a big reader? He is just starting to get more interested in reading, and expanding his interests more, but I want to find him a book to read that will interest him, and bring forth new ideas for him.  
I think he is more interested in non-fiction, but seems to like the kinds of books that are less 'textbook-ish'.

What age is your child?

Tau Zero by Poul Anderson  
Sci-Fi story exploring the experience of a ship that is stuck in accelleration to light-speed.  
 
Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari  
A well researched study of the evolution of our species and growth of our global culture. Very well written and a lucid, easy read.

Have you tried the good old public library? This way he can find an interest and look up many books in that area.

I was thinking more along the lines of getting him a birthday gift. I'm just at a bit of a loss on what to get him!

I never seem to have a lot of time to read, but I do love biographies.  
 
Not sure what his humour leans towards, but I love anything written by Ricky Gervais or his sidekick, Karl Pilkington.  
 
The "An Idiot Abroad" series they did on BBC is available as books. He has to be a tad sarcastic though to enjoy them.

I agree, I would get a biography if you want a non-fiction book. Then pick something that suits his interests such as a biography about a sports hero, astronaut, or whatever might interest him.

My brother devours bios from his favourite bands.  
 
American Sniper is another really good book!
