Schools and spelling (Canadian vs. American)

Just curious, does your child's school teach Canadian or American spelling? Which one do you think they should be using?

Does it really matter? It is still the English language. Is it a big deal if they spell color vs colour? Labour vs labor? As long as it is spelt right in English I'll take anything.

Yes it does matter. This is part of our national identity. However small a part you might think it plays, and yes, people know what you mean either way, but I think it means something.

This is the funniest thing I've read all day, well played. Also, extremely accurate. I'm proud to be Canadian and if displaying that means taking a fraction of a second out of my day to write "colour" instead of "color" then I will continue to do that.

Judging from internet social media and chat rooms, no-one cares how they spell any more. This is not a new phenomenon either: in the late 80s when I graded psychology papers in university the spelling was atrocious then, too.

I prefer the Canadian (British) spellings myself.

I use American spellings. I guess this also comes with going to an American University. You should know both spellings and different ways of saying the same word. I don't like saying zed!

I do not see a big issue here as long as the rest of their spelling words and grammar are good and corrected
