So Myself and the wife recently bought a different house in Brandon in the past 2 months and we went and checked our mail this morning and found a city of Brandon utility's bill which we all know is normal. But the thing is for the billing period of June 1, 2016 to June 30, 2016 we have been charged $254.78 (for 1 month). We have been living in Brandon since 2008 and have never had our water bill higher then $78 (for a 3 month period with 2 people in the house). Has anyone else had this happen to them at all? and if so what kind of action did you take going about it? I know I've got to go to the City Hall on Tuesday but is there anything else I should be looking into?.

Monitor your meter for few days and write the amount of water that have been used in those few days, calculate it for one months and compare with what bill stays. It gives you a rough idea of your usage. If you think the usage shown on the meter is much more than what you have really been used, could be some water escapping from somewhere or problem of water leaking somewhere.

Check for leaks around the house, running toilets, etc. And make sure you don't have a neighbour that is helping themselves to your outdoor taps....LOL!  
We have had this happen with revenue properties, where a tenant did not report leaky taps or running toilets, etc. and we got a rude surprise on the water bill.

Have had this happen to me twice, both times it was a running toilet.  
As Deb said, monitor your meter. Also, there is usually an indicator (red diamond shape) at the top. If it is moving and you are not using any water, that means water is going through somewhere. If the meter tells you something is wrong, my first call would be to a plumber. That's what the city will tell you anyway.
