Helping self to City flowers

This morning at 10:50 am while waiting at the CIBC bank at 9th and Victoria, I witnessed a person in the flower garden at city hall. At first I thought it was a contractor working on the beds. Then this person with flowers in his hand jumped on a bike and proceeded south on the side walk on a banana. As soon as he left the flower bed a person on the balcony across the street started yelling at him. As he went by I yelled at him that those are taxpayers flowers, which he says he pays taxes as well, and I guess in his mind thought he was entitled to them. He was a young man with a long brownish beard, and I would be very surprised if he owned anything that the city would be taxing him for. He proceeded to turn east on Victoria and continued on his way on the sidewalk. It is troubling to be reminded that there are losers like him living in our midst's. I wonder what a person like this does for an encore? Possibly goes to the cemetery for fresh cut posies? He is a piece of $##t in my mind.

So he was picking flowers in a government planted flower bed......

He could've been sleeping in them or using them for a bathroom.

Maybe he was picking them for his dying grandmother or lady friend and didn't have any money because of all the taxes he pays .......

I agree what he did was not right, but to get all worked upped about it and to say he is a loser living in our midst. Pretty harsh, I sure hope something doesn't happen that you have no home, money, income, cause I would hate for you to be living in our midst.

Since we don't know the man, maybe he is not a loser. A guy hard up, bad luck, maybe he does have a well paying job and money.

I certainly wish that was all I had to worry about in a day, a guy picking flowers!

Ok I may have been a little harsh with my comments, but the other adult that saw this had the same reaction. I read eb occasionally and I have noticed that you comment on many topics (which I support as every one has that right). So please do not attack me for speaking my mind about someone stealing from the city. I cannot support vandalism.

Albeit mild, it is still vandalism. Public gardens are for display, not picking.

Actually is it good to pick the flowers. It helps to regenerate the plant, someone gets to enjoy the flowers, and the season is starting to wind down. Bonus for all involved.

No big deal. The flowers will bloom again if he didnt actually rip them up roots and all. If it brightens up some girlfriend or his mom or any other loved one's day then good. They're just a few flowers. And certainly not worth having your whole life judged and being deemed a loser by a perfect stranger.

And you think you have the right to judge this gentle man, yell at him in the street, and call him a piece is Sh&@ On Ebrandon? There may be many reasons he decided to pick the flowers. Did you ever think maybe he has a dying wife at home, and cannot afford expensive store bought flowers? Perhaps he knows of someone having a hard time, decided to brighten their day. Give the guy a break.

I understand the reaction. If someone were to come and pick the flowers that I planted, watered and weeded I'd be upset too. I put my own hard work into them.

And maybe they did do it for honourable reasons, but that doesn't necessarily absolve them from the wrong doing either. Fact of the matter is: you don't touch what isn't yours.

you guys are hard on the op

the flowers are meant to be enjoyed by all not picked by the public. Is it a huge deal, not really but if everyone of us had the thought that its better for the plant to pick the flowers there would be none left and the beds would be ugly so while there is defiantly worse types of vandalism the guy shouldnt have helped himself either

Everyone has an excuse for breaking the law or stealing... in your eyes.

Let's hope the city never plants long stem roses lest someone steals them for an anniversary!

if someone doesn't have no ey for flowers....they don't give a gift of flowers. Otherwise-as said above-if it is okay to take flowers when you cannot afford to buy some-then it must be okay to steal food when you are down on your luck and your kids or family members are hungry? Don't have a bed? Go steal one? Need a way to get to go and see your long lost family in Swift current or wherever? Steal a car? Where do you draw the line? No wonder there are thefts from the community Gardens and stores and homes and yards if so many really believe it is okay to take what they need-no, take what they WANT, because flowers are not a NEED!-when they cannot afford to buy.

Despite all the hysterics and dramatic what if's on this thread, it's still not a big deal. It wasnt the first time someone picked a few flowers, and it wont be the last. It's not going to lead to the downfall of society, or even lead to more costly thefts. If it was, it would have happened already.

I actually find it more sad to see attitudes like the op's than I do to see one guy picking flowers. But I do understand it. It sometimes feels good to call perfect strangers horrible names and to judge someone who you deem yourself better than as a loser and degenerate and piece of sh*t....over flowers.

So the guy didn't kill anyone but in my opinion, it's still not right to take things that don't belong to you. I pay taxes too so maybe I can go into city hall and take a couple potted plants from the foyer for my home?

I wonder if it would be a different story if one person or 20 people helped themselves to flowers from private yards. It is vandalism, theft and trespassing.

It's great to give people a break but where do we draw the line? You can steal flowers from the city but don't you dare steal my vehicle! No wonder this little town is riddled with crime.

Why aren't you also worried about the city planting mainly annuals, when perennials or biennials would be cheaper.. And why do they water them during the rain?
I'm sure that costs more money then a handful of flowers that will grow back

Would you still say let someone else deal with it if he was stealing from you? Yet be angry no one stood up and stopped them if they saw it?

Yes it's still trivial. But it'd about principles.

When my friend and I were young teens, we went out for a late night walk and picked town flowers (neepawa). The next day we mentioned it to my grandma and she was SO mad and disappointed!! She explained how wrong it was, how they weren't ours to do what we please with, we didn't plant them etc etc and how what we did was technically theft. She said if we did it again, she'd report us!! She may have been a bit extreme in her reaction but let me tell you, I have NEVER touched anything that wasn't mine since lol

perennials and biennials have a short flowering system so no point in planting too many of them.
Second, the flowers, especially in containers need to be well watered and fertilized regularly. If you were a gardener you would know that even though it seemed like the gardens/flowers got a 'good drink' it isn't always the case.

I was driving 18th. street north last week and the flowers lining the meridian were absolutely fabulous! The city flowers are something all citizens should be proud of! I know I am!

Lastly, THANK YOU to the city for planting and PROPERLY MAINTAINING the numerous baskets and containers that we get to enjoy!
