I do as much as I can to protect my family. My 17 year old daughter has a small car (CIVIC) and I put snow/ice tires on it. We taught her do drive and drive for the conditions. Tonight on her way home some idiot in a jacked black truck was honking at her, flashing his headlights and tailgated her right until she turned off at our street. She was driving about 40-45kph. Take a look at the weather and the roads. If you are in that much of a hurry take a time management course. And from what I've seen personally a lot of these idiots drive like madmen and then go to Tim Hortons or saunter into Canadian Tire, Walmart etc. and they don't run when they exit their vehicle. Don't like to paint with a brush but Jack up a truck, put some oversized tires on and I think you become and invincible Ahole. SLOW DOWN and think about how your actions impact other people and their families. Rant over for now. Drive responsibly for the conditions and have a great winter season.

On my way home from work this afternoon I was traveling number 1 highway, most vehicles going about 70km/h (including myself) but of course there were about 2 or 3 people that got impatient behind me and rode my rear end very closely (one being a semi). It's people like that, that are the ones who end up in the ditch or in rollovers because they're not taking the necessary precautions for the conditions. Always be considerate of other people and how you make them feel on the road!!

Maybe she didn't have her taillights on. I see a lot of people like that these days and flash my headlights to try to get their attention. But half the time, the driver is clueless and may be thinking that I'm raging at their driving instead. A flash or honk from behind isn't always from an inpatient driver.

I totally agree with you, but sometimes no matter how careful are you, the weather and road conditions just makes a mess of us sometimes.  
I saw a man driving through Victoria today and the icy road completely took his car away from the road straight to the curb. I felt sorry for him. Such a nice car.  
How do you explain yourself to mpi that it wasn't your fault? Hmmm!

Last week I was on hwy 10 south of Brandon and the traffic was traveling between 70 and 80 kph. I came up behind 2 vehicles that were doing 45 kph. I waited until it was safe to pass and did so safely when there was no oncoming traffic. If you are driving that slow compared to the average, then perhaps it is time to consider if you should even be driving. My own mother was one that was a nervous driver and am glad she quit driving over ten years ago.

If people are in the much of a hurry that they cant adjust their driving habits accordingly to reflect the weather, then they should try leaving early. I went out tonight and was driving 40 on 18th street. The roads were terrible and although my car can handle going faster, I knew it wasnt safe to do so. Thanks to the fact that I was driving slowly, i successfully stopped at a red light where I thought the line would be on the road. Yet for some reason, somebody drove right past me through a solid red light, tja kfully not causing an accident. Its betterto arrive 10 minutes late than arrive not at all. And like i said, if yoi are in a rush, leave early. Not that difficult to use common sense

I actually have to laugh at the kind of drivers the OP is describing. For one thing, I find myself wondering why they bother buying a nice vehicle, a vehicle with any options of any kind. Obviously, they don't want to spend any time in their vehicle at all. They just want to get from point A to point B as fast as possible and get out of it as quickly as they can. They must hate their vehicle, they certainly can't seem to stand being in it for any more than just a couple of minutes at a time. Instead of buying a nice car or truck and paying for optional equipment or paying to install expensive aftermarket audio, etc., they should just buy the most basic little bare bones puddle jumper they can find since they won't be spending any time in it anyway.

Nobody better try to move into "their" lane and, if they are driving on the highway and see a car ahead of them, they have to catch up to it and pass it or they just won't be right with themselves. It doesn't matter how far off in the distance the car in front of them is, they just can't stand the fact that anybody is ahead of them. They also have to prove that they are the better driver and that they have the better car and they can only do that by catching and passing every other car in sight. They must have some other inadequacy issues in their lives that they are trying to compensate for. LOL

-If there is another vehicle in front of you, no matter how far ahead of you it is, if you can see it you have to catch it and pass it.  
-If someone puts on their signal to change lanes, speed up and close the gap so as to make it impossible for them and then make sure that you give a good loud, long blast your horn at them.  
-Make sure that you drive at least 10 to 15 km/h above every posted speed limit at all times. Any drivers who have the audacity to drive within the speed limit don't belong on the road.  
-If weather conditions are bad you should drive even faster. For example, if you are driving in a blinding snowstorm or foggy conditions with near zero visibility and can barely see at all, you should always increase your speed so that you will get through the poor conditions sooner. Then when you are out of the fog or blinding snow and can actually see where you are going again you can slow down, but not to the speed limit. That would be way too slow.  
 
These are just some of the rules that every self respecting inconsiderate road rage idiot should know and follow.

People should be accustomed to adjusting driving for winter at this day and age. There's absolutely no reason to be tailgating in weather like this. If you are in that much of a rush then manage your time better or don't drive at all. When you drive like a lunatic you put everyone else around you at risk. People need to stop being selfish and worrying about themselves and think of what might happen if you are riding to close to someones rear end and you need to try and suddenly stop on ice.

I am a careful driver when road conditions are bad. I won't tailgate someone else-I like to keep well back to give myself stopping room if I need it. Having Said that it IS very annoying to get behind someone who is driving way slower than conditions warrant. Got behind a nervous driver a few mornings ago-traffic was going nice and steady at 80 but she was creeping along at 50. In fact we were able to pass her without going over 50-she apparently thought the road was icy, and it wasn't -it had been a few miles back but wasn't at the stretch where I caught up to her. Anyone that nervous should pull over and let traffic past when they see a string of cars behind, provided it is safe to do so. (not safe if the shoulder is heavy with snow that will pull you into the ditch)

I often say a lot of the same things about the people driving 60kph on Hwy 10. I think of their exaggerated sense of self importance, that they are obviously terrified of the dangerous road conditions but damnn it all if they are not entitled to get where they wanted to go that day.  
If you don't feel safe driving 80kph, stay home until conditions improve. Your just going to kill yourself or the rest of us who are not terrified of blowing snow. There isn't anywhere you need to be that you can't wait until conditions improve, in the meantime let the rest of us get back to work.

I don't think it has much to do with confidence about ones driving skills, I'm pretty confident about my driving skills, I'll venture out on the icy roads pulling a trailer and not really think much about it. What I do pay attention to is traffic flow and the actual condition of the road surface, as well as visibility problems that one may encounter because of drifting conditions, or white outs when meeting traffic. Simple logic for myself is that if sh*t happens I likely stand a better chance of survival in a low speed accident as opposed to a higher speed accident, another point is if you go sideways, while passing me, there's not much chance of me stopping to assist, I look at situations of a learning experience.

How do u know why they are on the road ?? I would think they had to be somewhere important or they would of stayed home.. Take me for example I am a single mom work fulltime.. I have to go home 3 smaller kids getting out of school.. I drive to my ability when icy... Stop judging.. Slow down and enjoy the drive.. There is no reason in this world that u need to go fast...

Kirkcaldy is snow covered and slippery, it's a major route thru the city, and as of 11am it has not been cleared. Snow drifts are starting, and trying to turn into Corral Centre is getting tough. Drive slow and be safe.

not just conditions of the road for drivers but also pedestrians. I have seen yesterday few walkers crossing the street with a hood over their face without actually looking much or taking a 2nd look around for drivers. Green or red light they just walk across. Is your life that worthless.  
It doesn't make it ok but they are some vehicles with bad tires so pedestrians do not cut off in the last seconds.  
Yesterday I saw a purolator truck turning on 10th street without slowing down to make the green light on time and his truck slided across right after the turn if were a cyclist on the street he would have hit the cyclist. No way I am biking on conditions like this...it is suicide I find.  
Tires or boots it is slippery condition for all we should all be careful.

Not hard to spot a poster that's been spared the experience of catching the wrong section of snow at just the wrong depth at just the wrong time when everything seems to be gliding among normally like it always has. It happens innocently in the blink of an eye and you never forget just how quickly and easily you can be out of control. About all one can do is hope that those with an over inflated sense of confidence learn their lesson via a harmless slide into the ditch like I did many years ago and not by spinning out while passing someone in traffic and hurting themselves or others. Be safe and smart folks and don't let anyone tell you how safe is too safe for you and your family.

Hard to tell in the video if the people were doing or exceeding the speed limit. Either way who's right or who is wrong when it comes to driving to the road conditions? I have encountered both people speeding and people going extremely slow. I have seen both end up in the ditch. When everyone goes within 10 km/hr of each other it is easier to keep traffic flowing. Too many times I see the person too timid to drive going down the highway 4-50 km/hr and then the guy doing 80 behind him realizes no flashers on the slow car, approaching quickly, needs to swerve out of the way and then skids to the ditch....now the blame is on him for going too fast that they couldn't stop. Just because you do 70 down the highway and I am doing 90 doesn't mean I am in the wrong for driving. Some people feel more comfortable than others.

the point is that they were exceeding the speed for the road conditions so one can only ASSUME they were speeding... the speed limit is for IDEAL conditions.

I don't like to assume. That is like saying that these people are speeding and not driving to the road conditions.

One - I never said the people in the video were speeding but they were obviously driving beyond their ability to stop on those road conditions.  
 
Two - Driving faster than road conditions allow is considered speeding.  
 
Three - Any meathead that THINKS he can SAFELY do the speed limit on icy/snowy roads is a complete moron.

Not trying to be a science geek, but there is more than confidence needed when driving on icy roads, and vehicles and drivers can really take things too far very easily. Anyone who has driven a car with way more horsepower than is needed, soon realizes that torque to traction plays a pretty big part in controlling a vehicle. When a person starts off from a stop the vehicle is is a lower gear and torque is readily available so spinning happens easily, now to maintain a vehicle at a higher rate of speed more torque is needed, and if your torque to traction ratio become to great you will lose traction.  
Example, yesterday #2 west of Souris was ice covered, at speeds up to 85 kph traction was not a problem in four wheel drive, at 95 kph the truck became a little loose, went back to 80 kph and went back to two wheel drive and the truck was very unstable because the torque was now only going to two driving tires and exceeded the torque to traction ratio. There are likely vehicles out there that could be very stable at posted speeds, but most of them are not, so although I'm very confident of my driving skills, I'm also aware that pushing the limits on icy roads likely isn't a wise thing to do.

I have three vehicles. The age of tires vary. My fresh snow tires give more traction for starting and stopping. That said my speed will be a reflection of which vehicle I drive.

and if someone tailgates me, I'll let them pass as soon as it's safe to pass.  
I slow down and put my right turn signal once it's safe to pass. Once they pass I keep continue driving at my own speed.  
How hard is that? Safe for everyone.

If the conditions are such that you need to drive 60kph on the highway you are safer staying home.

On Friday evening I was driving out to MacGregor and was behind a car that only had their daylight lights on!!! As it got darker, you could not see this car and I was afraid they'd get rear ended. I flashed them a few times and then got in front of them and tapped my break lights a few times. I even shut off ALL my lights for second to try and show them what they looked like. Didn't get it at all and they continued to drive in the dark. It was crazy. I started to wonder if they even knew how to turn their lights on as I can not believe someone wouldn't notice their lights were off!!

Of a sudden cant drive, i was driving home on 270 hwy and i had someone in a red car (doing about 40) i came up and went to pass becuase i didnt want to tailgate them, i wanted to get out of their read end so they werent worries about me. If your gonna do 40 on the highway, but your darn 4-ways on, so i know to slow down. It would have been alot easier to read end this person, and a heck of alot cheeper on my end, now i have to deal with my truck thats broken because someone doesnt know how to drive on the highway, and i ended up in a slu, if you dont know how to drive, then dont, they are way more dangerous than someone who had a truck and know what it can/cant handle!

1: The only way you could know they were doing 40 is if you slowed down to match their speed which doesn't seem likely from what I can understand.  
 
2. It sounds like you came up on someone driving slowly in BAD driving conditions, attempted to pass them, lost control and wiped out. My guess is that you were over-driving the conditions and paid for it.  
 
3. If MOST people are going less than 100km I would say that is a good indication going faster is hazardous.

but true, they probably need to know the limits of their truck.

you replied to this post because you feel you feel entitled. the roads, good weather or bad are for everyone. just because you have a big lifted 4X4 doesnt give you the right to drive unsafe for the conditions. if your truck hit the ditch and was damaged because you needed to pass the slower vehicle, thats your fault.

anytime you are in an accident because of the condition it IS because you are not driving appropriately for the conditions, if you were you wouldn't have gotten in an accident  
 
But people whos vehicles need to be slower then most others for the conditions should take precautions so that others can see they are slower, things like putting 4 ways on, or moving over if possible to let others pass, making sure both headlights and tail lights are on ect all help keep both drivers safe  
 
when in bad conditions, or anytime really, you should be scanning ahead enough that you would notice the vehicle ahead is going slow, you can tell this by how fast you are losing the gap between them and you, when you notice the difference in speed you should adjust your approach so that if you can not pass when you reach them you are able to slow enough not to rear end them, so while i do agree slow vehicles on the road do pose a considerable danger, it is up to us to be watching for dangers on the road
