What is wrong with our Justice System

So hearing on the news today of the sentance for the person convicted of assualt/beating last year will receive 30 months/ two and a half years.
Something that really baffle me is that the student accused of creating a false facebook profile to slander/insult their teacher if found guilty could be sentanced to 10 YEARS in prison.
Do this sound like a fair and effective justice system.
Assault of human with a piece of wood to a near coma = 2.5 years
False information on the internet = 10 years
