Does hard work ever pay off?

After working hard and diligently for almost 2 years now at my job, I find that people who value laziness and a slack work place get just as far in life. You figure you get a pay increase more fitting to the amount of work you do, just to find that all the people that are consistently late and slack off receive similar, if not better, priviledges and get away with alot more.
So is there anywhere in town that awards the hard worker and not the lazy worker or brown noser? I would love to know lol
