FYI :  
 
if you are renting out a Room in your home in Brandon, apparently it's considered a Rooming House and a fire inspector will visit to check that all safety rules are followed before you can have a "roommate" occupy the space.  
 
you need to have monthly updates, yearly fire extinguisher tests, and they will provide you with a list of the rules.  
 
a microwave is allowed in a room but not a toaster oven, and no extension cords -

doesn't seem like some rentals have to follow these strict rules.

this is according to the fire inspector who inspected the house  
we rent out one room in our home and have to keep a binder with all the regulations

technically they do

I know the work around in Winnipeg when I lived there was, if the door didn't have a key lock on it it wasn't a separate rented room. but you could have a lock on the inside then it wasn't classified as a rooming house.

Are you sure that was really the fire inspector? Check to see if your TV is missing.  
 
Or...you probably just play on a softball team with some buddinski fire safety person who weaseled their way into your house.  
 
Until I see the proof in writing, I reserve the right to remain skeptical. As far as fire safety, everyone should take it more seriously, whether they rent out a room or not.
