Find My Past is offering free genealogical searches this weekend. If anyone is tracing family history, it's a good opportunity to comb the archives of a very large worldwide website.

I'm not sure about ancestry and their planned free weekends.  
 
Ancestry and findmypast are worldwide competitors. Some records you will find with one and some with the other. They both have their pros and cons and are both worth searching (especially in their free search weekends).  
 
The thing about these family search websites are that there is usually a hook to grab you, but you can take advantage of their no cost search weekend promo.  
 
It's great to use their searches, but also keep in mind that https://familysearch.org/ is always no cost.  
 
Findmypast and ancestry are subscription based, so the search weekends are welcomed, but the above family search link is always free.

Yes both ancestry & family search aregreat, with different valuable information.  
 
What i like about ancestry is having all Canadian censuses in one place. I can track people every ten years this way and easily realize if someone is missing.  
 
when you find someone in a census, ancestry will even show you where they are in other years of the census.  
 
Family search has some of their records linked into ancestry (and maybe vice versa?)

Family search is one of the most comprehensive databases in the world.  
 
Over the years, I've found pros and cons with both ancestry and findmypast.  
I have subscribed to both at times and like both for one reason or another. Genealogy is not an inexpensive hobby, particularly if you are searching for past generations across the pond..  
 
It's good to sign up and register to get email alerts of their free weekend searching. Both FMP and Ancestry offer them several times per year.  
 
FindMyPast has many newspaper archives which have proved invaluable to my own searches. It's worth checking them out on this free weekend.
