With the provincial budget announced. Brandon will be getting a new school..planned for over the next 2 years! If anyone else has more information, please post!

When kids are in seats I will believe it. This stuff takes forever. I doubt this will impact my elementary aged kids but hopefully , eventually this does come to fruition and can have the intended impact to benefit education in Brandon.

Anyone have an idea where. It says south east so could that mean over by crocus?

The new school will be located on property that the Division owns immediately southeast of the 9th Street traffic circle, west of the Riverview Curling Club.

And is just not another election promise that lingers for a couple of years till 2020. That corner of the city dearly needs a local school.

I think this is the closest Brandon has gotten for a new school. I believe the next step are tenders on the construction part.  
 
The NDP had promised a new school and it wasn't part of their budget until it was time for re-election.

I wish people would come out to the budget meetings. I will be making sure I am at the next years one again and voicing my opinion. I love how they like to skew numbers with mill rates and assessment values and just plain excuses of costs go up. We should not see much of an increase as far as I have read they are using mobile classrooms and such. This should eliminate that need and migrate those teachers into the new school. Programs where I read to help keep students interested in school with self teaching which i:ncluded cup stacking and Minecraft and a 60% success rate....well those programs should be dropped and resources allocated elsewhere. I stand by my ignorance of calling them fluff classes which I see absolutely no value in.  
 
But on the positive it is good to see the PC's budgeting a school. Previous gov't has always shelled out what the unions want yet this one is only working on what we need first. Cuts are never good but neither is breaking the bank at the expense of all the people of Manitoba either driving us into unexplainable debt.

Sure it makes complete sense to stop doing those things. But IMO what is already at the older schools with always be there. They will continue to utilize everything.  
 
The new school with help new families in that area. The ones that are in the south end currently and enrolled in whichever school will most likely stay in that school, because their friends are going to that school already. Then comes ohh his older brother/sister goes to that school and so should his/her siblings.  
 
IMO when the school opens in whichever year. I doubt the tax rate would be lower than 1.5%. So for those that complain, enjoy the low rates, because the honeymoon can be over. Again my 2 cents.  
 
Also it's good news that they did not use the P3 model.

we get rid of one school a few years ago, sell it's field to the almighty developer, ruining what little sports fields we had, only to now go and replace the school? Do we have Montreal's mayors working for us now?

Don't get too excited. Every budget year for the past number of years this headline appears. Nothing ever materializes. Could be just another empty promise.

There has been no official announcement in the budget regarding a new school for Brandon by a political party in power until now.  
 
Yes, NPD did when they knew they were on the way out. But I wouldn't consider that a budget promise before an election.  
 
I also do not recall any tenders being made before the end of the year either.

This government ordered the school boards to limit their tax increase to 2% or under. That's a positive first step.  
If any government has the intestinal fortitude to make this change it's Pallister et al.

Well of course it's the Pallister government, they love to slash spending in everything...lol.. but that's for another convo.

about the increase being a little over 1%?

If my memory serves me correctly our school board increases have always been 4 to 5%. And after the budgeting has been finished a couple of months later BSD announces a nice little surplus. Think that's been the last 3 years maybe. Must have found the extra cash under a rock, lol  
 
Pallister and his crew do slash spending but tell me where he shouldn't have please?  
The only cut that is bothering me is how people who have sleep apnea have to pay for their machines (to keep them breathing overnight) And not from personal experience.

This year is less than 1%, but every yr they complain no matter what the percentage is.  
 
I'm not discussing conversative/Pallister on this thread.

this year. I was surprised to see the increase set at what was it 0.77%? No one can complain about that % and I don't seen anyone complaining.
