There's no easy answer

To any of this, I'm afraid. Our first and foremost concern should always be the preservation and protection of life during this conflict. It breaks my heart to see and to hear of the horrors unfolding right before our eyes. Like all Canadians, I wish more than anything that something could be done to end this conflict NOW, and that the brave people of the Ukraine could be given back what is being stolen and the abuse they are facing would end.
As far as the op discusion goes, nuclear threat is always meant to be a deterance, a last resort. The idea of it being a Mutually Assured Destruction, is unfortunately a very real possibility right now because one of the key players in the new Axis powers is obviously out of touch, and very much out of control, and there is no longer a pattern of predictability in how he responds to pressure.
The situation is very fragile, and the changes are very fluid moment by moment right now, but we have to continue to remain diligent in putting pressure on Russia to listen to reason, and do everything we can to prevent war. Political and economic pressure has to be our weapon of choice.
I really don't think people have a full grasp on what war would mean. Given the huge loss of life we've already seen from Russias assaults, it's more than obvious that a drawn out continental or potentially global conflict would be unimaginable, and the loss of life, and the potential destruction would be massive.
Think of how many people across the globe would be drawn into a war. Civilian and military losses would be huge. Just think of what the dusruption to manufacturing and loss of life would do to global food and supply lines, agriculrure production, medical provision, economic structure, job losses, etc. War would be something that many of us would realistically not be at all prepared to survive due to every country having to compete for daily commodities that would quickly be in short supply because of limited supply and demand. The social fracture as a result of that would cause a lot of stress on everyone, and riots and protests would become increasingly more violent as supplies dwindle.
Whatever hope we have, has to go into ending this conflict, saving and protecting life, and doing what is right. We must protect our freedom, and honor the values we were raised with. We must stand together with the Ukraine, united, hand in hand, as Canadians, against a tyrant that threatens the very fabric of global democracy.
But most of all, let's all hope a nuclear threat, or all out war never ever happens in our lifetime.
My heart breaks for the people of the Ukraine, for the families and the lives that are being ruined right now. I am so unbelievably sorry for what is happening. I wish we could all do more to help.
