Though not as big an issue in Canada as it is in the US (at least not yet), I think it is an issue that gets FAR to little attention.
While the restrictive pipe (some content is treated more highly than others) aspect is the main thing that comes to mind, one should also consider metered pipes. Data caps or "buckets" (as I believe Telus markets them in their home broadband footprint).
You can use the pipe as you please, but considering the direction that technological innovation is going (higher bandwidth consumption), one best keep an eye on it.
One thing that interests me is how this all plays into the whole online free speech debate (as it happens anywhere, really). While you can find no shortage of material for the one, you have very little for the other. Which is asinine in a way, because the 2 are linked.
My solution for people that feel that for whatever reason social media platforms of current are not fulfilling enough of the needs of various cohorts has been to build their own oasis. The internet is unique in that way.
You can have what you desire, all you need to do is build it.
This is of course dependant on net neutrality.
