It's may 1st...Is it too soon to plant root crop seeds? ie...potatoes, carrots, beets,onions etc...thanks

Potato’s are already in the ground, I planted them this week. This is late for us

I succession plant lots of things, so I will plant again, but I've already done 2 plantings of radishes, beets and carrots. Potatoes in the next day or two, whenever their site is prepped. Peas yesterday. Greens and spinach two successions already. Onions a couple of weeks ago.  
 
Beans can probably go in the next week or two if the weather holds.

I thought the ground would be too cool to plant anything yet.

Ground here is far to wet to even walk on let alone till/dig. Will need at least two weeks of warm weather to enable me to get started. Potatoes usually go in about middle May so tops do not get frosted, peas/ beans sown about end of May when everything else usually gets done. Guess it is warmer and more sandy where you folks are.

Some seeds like a cooler ground and do better, specially peas, beans another. If fact I have even planted peas and beans in late, late fall for a very early crop. Definetly garlic and winter onions also.

On my second plant , I soak the seeds for 48hrs, not first plant cuz don't want them to sprout fast as we still may get a bad frost

I have some raised beds, so they dry out faster and warm up quicker. I could work the soil in some of them by the end of March already. I also amend with lots of compost, which seems to make a difference too.

Does anyone have any hoop houses or low tunnels? I kinda experimented with it this year in my own cheating way, and it seems to have paid off. I'm curious to know the experience of others in this climate.

Still had at least a foot of snow on our garden on 4th April. We have pools of water around even now.

My garden is a big mud hole right now too. We don't usually do any early planting, just not our style LOL. We do hope to put in a couple of raised beds to move the strawberry patch. For those of you with raised beds, did you use cedar?

We don't use cedar, we just use untreated wood. They last about 4-6 years, but by then usually we've changed our minds and are ripping it out, LOL. This is our 10th summer here and we've had no fewer 3 major reconfigurations/expansions and are doing another this year, although what's in place will remain essentially unchanged.  
 
I don't have room for a large plot, so I have multiple smaller ones, ranging from 4x8 to 8x12, with most around 4x12. My total growing space by the end of this expansion will be roughly 500 square feet spread over 8 plots, plus wherever I can tuck pots/containers/barrels etc (not including perennials and fruiting trees).

Where we are it is way too muddy too. The frost is barely out.  
 
The area eBrandon services takes in a lot of growing zones & soil types. Even within growing zones there can be widely varied growing conditions due to weather patterns, elevation, geographical features & soil types. This is why you will be getting varied answers here. For us, within an hour, we know places where the season is a week earlier & another is a week later. Both of these would be considered within eBrandon's area.
