I am wondering what people do in the fall to their lawns to make the lawns better..lots of bags of stuff in the flyer, but don't know what to choose...there used to be a product called "weed and feed" but I don't see it anymore.

I think there is a Scotts one that has a fall fertilizer.

I could be wrong but I think in the fall you should water the grass quite a bit then add fertilizer just before winter (just before the snow) but I do not know the perfect number needed for fertilizer as for nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium.  
The grass can be cut short or should be cut short I am not too sure about that one.

In the fall you want to prepare the turf by applying a fertilizer with potassium (K). This is the third number that shows up on the bag. Typically I use something like a 15-0-30. The K is taken up by the plant and it uses it to thicken the cell wall in the plant making it more resilient to the cold temperatures. You want to put down about 1 lb of K/1000sq ft. This would be about 3.3lbs of product/1000 soft. You could pretty much get away with applying it any time now. Plant needs to be active to take it up so don''t wait to late.
