Tips belong to the House
4/10/2010 at 1:45 AM
In Manitoba, all tips belong to the "House" , In other words the Owner of the business. (Check out "Employment Standards Manitoba Gov't.)Without going into a lengthy explanation, it is because the owner has provided the business to the community, holds the mortgage, pays the wages to the employee and is responsible for all aspects of that business. Thus , the gov't says he is entitled to all tips.
Most owners allow the employees to keep their tips, or at least share with the rest of the staff. But, they do not have to do so , by Law.
Employees are there to work the job they are hired to do, and to do the best job they can to "promote" the business where they work.
Customers should show their appreciation, or dissatisfaction,by using the "tip" as a way for the Owner to judge how his business is being received in the community.
This thread seems to revolve around the "service" employee, and whether to tip or not tip the employee. Many employees seem to think they are entitled to a tip, and if they don't' get one, then next time, "service: might be a bit poorer.
If I was that person's employer, they would not be keeping their job.
Whatever job one works in, there are good days and bad days, and good customers and bad customers.
We are Paid a wage to do the job we were hired to do. Hopefully we all do it as best we can.
Tipping should be done to show the "Owner" how we view his/her establishment. Not how we view the employees of that establishment.
Again, I remind you to check out the "Employment Standards of the Government of Manitoba." All tips belong the the HOUSE.
