I am new to the area and am dying for a good hearty homemade bowl of Borscht....any suggestions on where to go? Must be homemade!

I think home made means you have to get invited for dinner somewhere! ;) lol

If you want to go for an hour drive south of Brandon for some home cooked excellent meals, including Mennonite borscht, there is Country Corner cafe there that has it, but only on one day. She cooks certain things on each day and I cannot remember which day is borscht, you will have to phone. Everything, including the pies is home made!

What kind of borcht? There are different kinds....  
 
Maybe try the Blue Hills bakery on Richmond, as they serve a variety of soups, and everything is homemade.

There is a Ukrainian food restaurant in the Town Centre, name escapes me but our office ordered food from there in December. From what I understood the food was excellent as well as the borscht! Very reasonable price for what you get!

its actually really easy to make,  
 
hamburger,  
beets  
potatoes  
carrots  
onions  
stewed tomatoes  
beef broth  
cabbage  
dill  
top with sour cream

no meat in Ukrainian borscht....beef broth, beets, cabbage, garlic, and dill (that's how I make it, anyways)

I had the borscht at Ukrainian Cuisine and it was not what I expected. It tasted okay, but it wasn't like my Babas! It was not beet borscht and there were big chunks of meat in it. Blue Hills is pretty tasty and they serve Borscht on Fridays.

I know this doesn't help you now but each summer we have an abundant supply of beets from the garden. Out comes the large soup pot for borscht. We then freeze it so we are lucky to have it in the winter. That with homemade buns,comfort food from Baba's kitchen

i like meat in my borscht but maybe i make Hungarian borscht, they have better cabbage rolls too

Yes Blue Hills you could try, my husband makes great borscht!!

Never heard of hamburger in borcht either. The only type of borscht I know with meat in it is Mennonite borscht with farmer sausage, potatoes and cabbage. YUM!

Farmers sausage...but also meaty beef soup bones or meaty ham bones.  
 
There is also cabbage, potatoes, dill, onions, salt & pepper and sour cream before serving. If you are making the beef version, there can also be carrots, tomatoes and parsley added.  
 
Oh so good! I have a ham bone, broth and cabbage waiting in the fridge right now.  
 
Mennonite borscht freezes well. I was curious...does the Ukrainian beet borscht freeze well too?

Grandmas recipe uses bacon. So yummy.

what kind of borscht, I lived with a Polish family, all i know is that it's darn delicious, thank you for your suggestion

Which type are you wanting to taste/make?  
 
I am familiar only with making the Mennonite version, not the Ukrainian beet one. I would be willing to teach you if this is the recipe you want. You could get everything you need for it now.  
 
I always make mine fresh as it is not a hard soup to make and doesn't take long.

mmmm......ham bone broth makes the best soup.  
 
To the OP, if you lived with a Polish family, I'm guessing you had beet borscht, likely with no meat in it.

as with any recipe every town or family had their own so i never really understood how these recipes haveto follow every ingredient to a T but whatever you call the one i make people do like it and it came out of a Mennonite cookbook but it seems the same as my Hungarian grandmother made  
 
if you want to make your own google a recipe that looks like it fits what you remember as all probably taste good and Borscht type recipes are easy to make and do freeze well

I agree that there are many variations due to origin (like language and language dialects), family tastes and ingredient availability...but there are some basic ingredients which are common to each type (cabbage or beet). This will be your basic borscht and have the correct flavor.  
 
If it didn't have these, you would just a have soup. It might be a good soup, and be somewhat borscht-like but not borscht. I would encourage the OP to start with the basics and experiment from there.  
 
The Mennonite version does not vary greatly. There are simple differences, which I listed. Generally it would be which veggies to add (as listed) and meat choice.  
 
I suspect that beet borscht is much the same.
