I was at Sobeys west end today about noon getting groceries WHY does the store need to be that cold????  
I didn't stay long maybe that's what the business wants. May try another store or maybe they are all the same?

is freezing, I have to take a sweater with me when I go.

It would be to help keep not just patrons cool in summer heat but to keep things like produce fresh and things like milk and meat from starting to spoil while your shopping.

was at princess auto 2 days ago and the store was cold.

i think the temp of the store defiantly helps fresh items stay fresher but i also wonder if the store isnt that cold, we are just used to the heat so the normal temp makes the stores seem colder  
 
if my memory is correct i seem to remember your nerve cells take 10 days to acclimatize, thats why -10 feels awfull in october but in january i can go out with just a sweater in it

It is probably not cold to the staff who are working. They are moving around doing things.  
 
I am sure the coolers that the frozen foods are in let off cold too.

In winter when the house was 23 degrees it was too cold and she needed to crank the thermostat, but in summer, when it was 23 degreees, it was too hot and needed to crank the A/C down. Sounds like a similar problem here

Ok I'm going to be a smart a$$.  
It's summer time folks, it's called air conditioning, and when the temperature and humidity get up there it can really feel hot out there, and trying to guess exactly how warn it's going to be is sort of difficult, so I imagine most places leave the thermostat turned down, cooling a building off requires a fair amount of energy and it's likely more cost effective not to let it warm back up. I run on hot all the time and in a way find it refreshing to suffer a bit in a cool building as compared to suffering from the heat,  
The point about staff is a good one, I mentioned to a teller about the store being cool and was told that if you were busy it seemed warm enough.

I can't imagine if the grocery stores didn't have air conditioning! Especially if the place was super busy! Tempers already flare when there's a crowd!

throw a sweater in your car. If you happen to end up at Sobeys', throw it on and make shopping there a little more enjoyable.

What is the cubic meter of the air in a grocery store? It cannot be changed easily.  
 
The temperature is set so that it will still be cool at 3:00 PM, even if this means it will be a little cooler at 10:00 AM. By the time the temperature is set and achieved to match the weather outside at 10:00 AM, it will be close to noon and need to be reset only to have it too warm for a couple of hours until that temperature of air has replaced the warmer air.  
 
Also, simple science fact is that the cold air will settle to the bottom where the shoppers are by the warm air will be rising to where the temperature gauges are located, making it more difficult to set the temperature for the shoppers.

Look around the store. It has open freezers and coolers. The store isn't deliberately trying to make the customer cold. Just trying to keep the products at the right temperature.
