I get the impression that some drivers are unaware that (depending on the make/model of their vehicle) driving while using running lights does not necessarily mean that their tail lights are on.

I see this all the time. I think it also stems from people assume because it’s the daytime they don’t need their lights on which is a myth.  
 
Not sure how often cops actually ticket for stuff like that but all lights are supposes to be on while driving a vehicle.  
 
Pretty sure there was a post on the RCMP’s Facebook page about this exact issue not too far back now.

Drl are only needed on vehicles that came with from factory or vehicles that have been imported into the country. This means not all vehicles need to have lights on while driving.

all vehicles need to have lights on after dark, front and rear. I can't believe how many people don't know they don't have their lights on when driving at night.

Must be on after it is a certain amount of dark but running lights are sufficient during daylight hours. If lights, front and rear, were required in daylight then new vehicles would comes with that feature. As it is-the auto setting gets you running lights in daytime and full lights when it is dark enough to require them.

I posted the thing on fb from the RCMP. Any vehicle manufactured after 1989 need to have them.

My comments were about people who drive around with no lights on at all during the day. I’ve seen people with no front lights on

When i see someone driving after dark with only their running lights on and no tail lights makes me wonder if they ever look at their speedometer ? If you have not turned your lights on to full there is no lights on your dash !!!

It''s easy to leave the lights on "auto" if so equiped, but for whatever reason this may not be an option. It''s happened to me a few times as my better half (for whatever reason) doesn''t like to yse the auto light function. For some vehicles such as ours car manufacturers have decided to have the dash lights come on whenever the running lights are on, so essentially the dash lights are on all the time when one is driving making it almost impossible to distinguish if your driving with your lights on at night.I don''t know how this feature hasn''t been picked up by the proper aithorities as a driving hazzard that must be corrected. For those wondering, we have a 2014 Camry and yes the dash lights are on as soon as the engine is running no matter the light switch position. Car manufacturers should correct this if it hasn't been done already. Probably most Toyotas in those years have dash lights constantly on when the engine is running and maybe other car manufacturers as well. Why they woukd design it this way? I don't know as I see no benefit to this feature at all.

I have pulled up to people at red lights to let them know they have no tail lights on. They have the daytime running, their dash lights do come one, but no tail lights. There is no way for you to know that your tail lights are not on. If the tail lights are not on then it should be made that your dash lights are off too.

For some reading every time we take our car into Kia they take the lights off of auto! It usually takes a few days for me to remember to switch them back on. Hubby driving behind me one night honking at me and I thought he was just being stupid and playing around. Oops!! Lol.  
 
I don’t drive out car enough and had trouble finding where to turn the lights on!

Actually usually there is a light that will come on, on the dash of your vehicle when your tail lights are on. In my truck it’s a green light that comes on to tell me that my tail lights are on.  
 
But the government is taking steps to prevent people from driving with out tail lights.

My wife rec'vd a friendly verbal warning by the Police for that. It was nite time though. I think when the remote start was installed the auto on for the headlight work but not the tail lights.  
 
 
Now she simply ignores the Auto function and it's lights on all the time. Having those tail lites on during the day helps in many ways. Not just dawn or dusk but fog/rain and heavy snow.

In actual fact, headlights are NOT required during daylight hours. The vehicle must be equipped with properly working lights. However-Dection 35 (11) of the Highway traffic Act states that the lamps carried in a vehicle are required to be lighted when the vehicle is on a highway one half hour before sunset and one-half hour after sunrise and any other time when there is not sufficient light to render clearly discernible a person in a highway at a distance of 60 meters ahead of the vehicle.  
 
At high noon on a clear day lights are not required to be in use.

In actual fact all passenger vehicles manufactured after 1989 are required to have functional daytime running lights. Every one of these driving posts make me think there are a lot of people who should not have a license.

They do this at Honda too. Went to Wpg once and leaving there, it was pitch black on the highway. Didn't even realize the lights weren't on because my dash was lit. Try to remember now when I take my car in for service.

Is the people who don't think they need to turn their lights on when the weather is bad. If it is snowing or raining or foggy you need to turn your lights on. Not for you to see but other people to see you so they don't crash into you

I don't understand the reasoning as to why people don't leave their lights on all the time. Is it a fashion statement or "cool" to not have them on? I have personally almost rear ended a car on the highway who came out of a merge with no tail lights on, didn't see him till almost on top of him. Do us all a favour run with your lights on.

Your dims, not your brights. Brights make things worse in those conditions.
