I’ve heard something from my mechanic saying there will be new ‘improvements’ coming into effect that will supposedly increase the one page safety to two pages (essentially nitpicking things like cracks in plastic interiors etc) and instead of a flat rate of $50ish bucks it will be per hour to benefit the shops. Mpi hasn’t said anything and this is all here say, I safetied my car last month so I might have slipped through the cracks but looking for information/confirmation. Thanks.

I think the changes came in March 1st. I haven't seen the new sheets myself. I know someone who does safeties and its about time that MPI allowed them to charge more than $55. That is not a lot of money for the time spent on inspecting the vehicles.

There was a News Release a short while ago, about fee changes. Once I find that article, I'll share it here.  
 
The increase isn't about benefiting repair shops, however more to do regarding changes in vehicle technology, and improved safety systems.

All the new inspection procedures can be found here. It doesn't look like many big changes here. More like changes made to keep pace with the industry and changing times.

The changes is that there is no longer “recommendation only”. Those are the items that pass but only slightly. Now with the new regulations, it’s either a pass or a fail.
