All will depend on...

Where you're at and who's going? If say I'm a urban center somewhere with just one other... I would be practical with a short wheel-based, high stanced SUV for getting in & around traffic and parking lots. Open roads through the mountains? I prefer something with zip with a minimum of a large sunroof (full roof glass panoramic style, perhaps). Unless I'm with the family, that would require a full-size SUV (with the glass roof) to move everyone comfortably, plus all of their stuff. The air-conditioning thing is pretty much a standard thing on all new vehicles, especially rentals, so that's not an issue these days. My fantasy would be to have or rent a classic and put a few hundred km's a day on some roadways here in Canada or in the States. Imagine this... Big car, bright colour, gleaming chrome, the soft rumble of the V8, top down while viewing over a long imposing hood as we roll down a quiet picturesque highway. That's what I rather have for a holiday involving a car. In fact, I would love to try to repeat what my brother did when he took his wife in his Trans Am to Vancouver and back through the US to Manitoba. Just a suitcase, a classic from the past, credit cards and lots of free time to take in & share the trip with someone special. ...One day I'll make that happen. As for the gas? ...Who cares? You're on a holiday! Does anyone say anything when you go to a buffet every day at a resort? It's called "holiday indulgence". Did my brother care when he drove that far with a 7.5 liter monster? He rather traded a few nights in a cheap motel to fill the car with premium and run it to the next gas station 3 hours down the road. That was his holiday indulgence. And mine as well when I get the chance. My advice is to go with your gut in choosing the car for the trip and make yourself happy. Because if this summer is anything like the last? ...Make the best of it with what you can. If that means a sporty car or a door-less jeep? ...Go for it! Just remember that you can't lock any valuables in a soft top.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
