I hit a couple snowbanks the other day on my way home from work and I destroyed my bumper. Is that considered an at fault accident and I’ll lose 5 merits? I tried calling Mpi but I can’t get through so figured I would ask here in case someone had gone through the same thing

Cheaper to pay to fix it yourself.  
 
Or if not too bad just leave it especially in older car.

MPI would have to determine case by case but it is a drivers responsibility to be in full control of their vehicle at all times so they will likely determine that you are at fault .

And you will pay deductible.  
Your driver rating will drop by 5 points per claim, and your licence will cost more.  
It happened to me.

Remember, that at anytime in the future after an at-fault claim has been processed, that "You can pay MPI back the cost of the claim" and this will also get you your 5 Demerit Points reversed, and also your position on the Driver Safety Rating (DSR), as it relates to your insurance Discount.

As dealing directly with garage ends up being cheaper.

I would check into an mpi claim though to be honest. These vehicle repairs can run into several thousand dollars quickly now. When I damaged my little truck (my own stupid fault) I figured out the cost of deductible and increased premiums for the years to get my 5 merits back and in my case it was quite a bit cheaper to make the claim and take the demerits then it was for me to pay the repair. That’s what insurance is for after all.
