buying tires

my son had my truck up at clear lake all summer while working up there,when he returned my truck somehow the two back tires were bald,of course he had no idea how they got like that,anyway ,l went to a tire shop and said, can l order two new tires for my truck,he asked,is it 4x4 ? l said yes,he said you'll need to buy 4 new ones,not just the back two.he said it will not ride properly if you just get two new back ones.does anyone know if this is true ? or am l getting it from behind ? thanks..
