How old is the paint job on your vehicle? I highly doubt it was the bug wash that stripped your clear coat. Over time the sun dries out paint, then a stone from the car in front of you chips a little spot on your hood, bumper, etc.. Then when you take a power sprayer to the surface it will catch the lip of the chip, and lift it off like peeling an eggshell.
