Just tossing this out there. There are many places still that give good honest work and charge by the hour. I have did the backyard route before trying to save money and it was hit an miss on needing the work redone and in the long run costing more. Hard to keep going back to someone paying them cash and arguing about the work done. A good shop with a decent shop rate is by far my route to take.

Hence why the op was asking for a backyard mechanic that you would recommend. They didn't want to have to go your route to find their mechanic. They wanted to use an already established one.

I know plenty of shops in town that are great at replacing parts and charging you money. The diagnosing is where I find backyard guys shine.
