Installing Hitch for Trailer

Was looking into getting a hitch installed on our mini-van to be able to pull a tent trailer, but didn't realize how expensive it is! Looks like the hitch itself is about $250.00. Does anybody know anyone that does this on the side for cheaper or can you get a used hitch somewhere?

a used hitch is possible but it can be hard to find the right fit. Yes, new ones are 200 and up-used more like $75 to 100.

I have 2 for 75 each - 1 I know would not work for you. The other might. I honestly do not know what it was made to fit, just know it is not for a Chevy or Ford 1/2 ton. PM me if you want measurements or we can meet and you can try it against your van.

We've purchased 2 hitches there for exceptionally less than we could find here. They use a courier to ship so it's quick as well.

Considering the hitch must fit for specific vehicles...carry so much tongue weight and possible wiring harness. I can see how price vs safety can be an issue.

One place tried to soak me 2 hours labour for installing a trailer hitch. I just laughed and bought an impact wrench to self-install.

Shop around, there are plenty of good deals on hitch equipment. The shops will try and use scare tactics.

My advice - don't get taken "Advantage" of by the trailer/hitch shops.

...you can purchase the hitch online for a lot less. Www.rockauto.com

Ship to border and go get it
Install is usually 8 bolts that go in already mounted nuts/ holes. You will need to watch a couple YouTube videos on how to mount, they are online as well.

Buy the wiring harness from your dealer, usually a little more but it's guaranteed to fit and to work.

Took me 2 hours on a 2013 Hyundai Santa fe. Cost about $280 total
