I have a 2010 Edge. Cooling fan starts soon after car starts and runs constantly. Shuts off properly after a few seconds after Edge is turned off.

I know this is a problem with a few Fords. Just wondering if anyone has had the problem identified and a solution/repair. Thanks

It is normal if your engine is hot enough to require the fan to run, but you do have another issue as this time of the year you definitely shouldn't have that problem. I'd check your coolant level. Low to no coolant can cause that.

Common issues with any vehicle is a bad thermostat...

Do you have your defrost on? When your defrost is on it turns AC on to take moisture out of cab and needs air pulled across the AC condenser. Which would turn your fan on? Or I could be wrong.

Thank you for the info, folks. The cooling level and thermostat are ok, checked them. Yes have checked which setting it is on, as air conditioner being on may cause that. Fan starts almost as soon as I start up. Started as an intermitant problem but now seems to be doing this more often. I am thinking it is a sensor malfunction or something.

Ok, based on responses above, first, thermostat failing is unlikely as 99% of the time they fail open and you would have the opposite problem (never appear to warm up) peterbuilt? Above is also on to something however. What can also cause this is if the refrigerant in your ac is low. Seen this on my Ford many years ago. Another possibility is air in your cooking system. If there was a sensor problem, it should show that your temperate is high via the gauge in the dash. Best guesses based on info posted. Good luck!

I've had multiple times in older vehicles where the fan would come on more and temp be really high, change out the thermostat and it remedied the problem. Had some that stuck shut, and even if stuck fully open it flows too fast that it doesn't have a chance to cool down throu the radiator which will also make it overheat

Is your Check Engine Light on?  
 
Check the front bumper and see if there's anything wrong with the shutter system that closes to block airflow to the radiator which is supposed to save on gas by improving the aerodynamics.  
 
If the shutters have any error, then the computer will run the cooling fans constantly to protect the engine from overheating since it can't count on the shutters to be open. This should generate a Check Engine Light.  
 
A blown fuse for the shutter system will also do this.

Does this sound like your issue? There is 5 or so scenarios on the network about various fan issues. But need more information. CEL previous codes etc.

The Check Engine Light (CEL) is on with a code P1289 that resets immediately. Also the cooling fans run all the time with the engine running and the message center in the dash says the engine coolant temperature is out of range.  
 
Average Reported Mileage: 31000  
 
Tests/Procedures:  
 
1. A code P1289 is indicating high resistance or open circuit in the Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor circuit.  
 
2. The CHT sensor is mounted in the rear cylinder head towards the passenger side under the intake manifold. However, there is a 2 wire connector in the same area that can normally be accessed for testing. The two wires in the connector are Blue/Grey (BU/GY) and Green/White (GN/WH). The GN/WH wire should be a good ground. The BU/GY wire is the signal wire from the sensor and should read close to 5 V with the sensor disconnected, and read about 3 V at 70 degrees F with everything connected. Check the voltage on this wire to see if it reads over 4.5 V with everything connected. If so and the GN/WH wire is a good ground, the CHT sensor or the short wire harness to the CHT sensor is open.

Chase your butt all over the place wasting hours, days, weeks. Take it somewhere and pay them to trouble shoot the problem.  
 
I have done that and I saved both time and money.
