Thinking of getting some sand bags or something for the winter. i have a little truck and need a bit of weight back there. Any suggestions?

if you use your box a lot a plate or two of steel is good, if you dont i use snow

I do not recommend patio slabs... if you have no way of making sure they don't slide around in the box of your truck, they will damage your truck whether it be the bed liner or the lift gate.

I put 5 in the back of my 1/2 ton-that works well for me.

I use a couple of blue pallets...takes up space but they add great weight and are stable.

of sand in the bottom of the truck box. it will freeze and become solid but will not become a projectile if you hit the ditch or get into an accident.

Actually, that might become loose in an accident and you could have a flying frozen chunk of sand to deal with.

Where will you find that now? All the garden supply places have that stuff put away. I would not use sand as the bags will deteriorate and dissolve.  
 
The CHEP (blue) pallets is a good idea, if you can get them. There is supposed to be a deposit on them as they are returnable.  
 
I like the sidewalk blocks. Heavy and dense. Pour water on them to freeze them in place.

hate to tell you but sandbags, or anything thats no strapped or tied down, can become a projectile in an accident, a steel plate can be bolted down if someone is worried about it but what i usually did was just shovel snow in the back, free and no need to unload in the spring

I just picked up 5 10 kg sand & salt bags from Canadian Tire for $3.99. Already noticed a difference in my little Ranger on the drive home.

I know, not going to work if you don't have one, but I have to move ours this weekend, so I think I will leave it in the truck as it must weigh 100lbs and is anchored. I could even throw some sandbags under the frame which will help contain it. Then if I am stuck on ice somewhere, I have sand to spread for traction. Above ideas are good for weight, but one should think of worse case scenario where the weight in the back could become a projectile causing damage or injury in its path.

Years ago in an older truck I built my own weight with a couple sheets of plywood and some 2x4's to make a box and filled it with sand. If memory serves I even screwed the box into the truck before I fillled it with sand. Worked great, never slid around and gave me tons of traction
