Join Dr. Alex Koiter for the sixth annual landscapes of western Manitoba nature walk. Our adventure begins in a shale quarry, located near where Hwy 10 crosses the Souris River, where we'll explore the history of southwestern Manitoba during the Cretaceous period (145 to 66 million years ago) when a shallow, subtropical ocean called the Western Interior Seaway covered the region. We will then travel south-west to the Dand Valley and the Chain Lakes to learn about the formation and demise of glacial Lake Hind (~12,000 years ago).

We will meet in Brandon at 9:00am for those who wish to carpool, otherwise at the shale quarry at 9:30am on Saturday, August 8th. The shale quarry is approximately a half hour drive south of Brandon. After exploring the quarry, we will head south-west to the Chain Lakes recreational area.

This outing involves walking along some uneven ground. Please be prepared and bring a good pair of walking shoes, sunscreen, bug protection, and water, maybe some snacks and lunch too!
