Assistant Drama Director & Production Coordinator

  • $0.00
  • Brandon

Westman Drama Ministries is looking for an enthusiastic, responsible, and creative Assistant Drama Director & Production Coordinator to join our Christian drama program! This season we are putting on Seussical Jr. with a group of 69 kids and youth ranging in age from 8-17.

This is a great opportunity for a college/university student or young adult who loves working with kids, enjoys theatre/music/dance, and wants to take on a meaningful leadership role in a fun and creative environment.

We're looking for someone who isn't afraid to take charge, solve problems, and get things done. You'll work closely with the Drama Director throughout the season and become an important part of bringing our productions to life.

During Rehearsals (Monday & Tuesday from 5:15-8:30pm):

You'll work alongside the Drama Director to help keep rehearsals organized, productive, and fun. Responsibilities include:

  • Taking attendance and keeping track of students.
  • Helping supervise and manage large groups of children.
  • Keeping students focused and helping with transitions between activities.
  • Assisting with behaviour management and problem-solving.
  • Helping students when they need extra support.
  • Jumping in wherever needed to keep rehearsals running smoothly.
  • Taking initiative and helping make decisions when unexpected situations arise.
  • Being prepared to step into a director role and run a rehearsal if the Drama Director is unavailable.

Production & Behind-the-Scenes:

There will also be opportunities to take ownership of production tasks outside of regular rehearsals. Depending on your interests and strengths, these may include:

  • Putting up posters and helping promote our shows throughout the community.
  • Reaching out to local businesses about sponsorship opportunities.
  • Helping organize, create, source, and prepare props.
  • Organizing production materials and keeping things organized behind the scenes.
  • Taking on other projects that help bring the show together.

You don't need to be an expert at everything! We're happy to work with your strengths and interests. If you're creative, we'd love to put those skills to use. If you're organized and good at talking to people, we have jobs that fit that personality too!

Show Week:

This is where you'll really get to take ownership!

During show week, the Assistant Drama Director & Production Coordinator will help lead the behind-the-scenes operation of the production so that the Drama Director can focus on teaching and supporting the kids.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Organizing and directing teen stage crew volunteers.
  • Coordinating parent volunteers.
  • Assigning jobs and making sure volunteers know where they need to be.
  • Managing backstage organization and logistics.
  • Troubleshooting problems as they come up.
  • Communicating with crew, volunteers, and the Drama Director.
  • Taking charge of backstage operations during performances.

The goal is for you to become the person the Drama Director can turn to and say, "I've got the kids, can you do this for me?"

Who We're Looking For:

We're looking for someone who is:

  • A committed Christian who is willing and able to reflect the values of our program.
  • Reliable & Dependable: We need someone who will show up when they've committed to being there and can be counted on.
  • Confident leading and managing large groups of children.
  • Comfortable giving direction and taking charge when necessary.
  • Responsible and mature, while still being fun and energetic.
  • Organized and able to keep track of lots of moving pieces.
  • A strong communicator who is comfortable working with both kids and adults.
  • A problem-solver who can think on their feet.
  • Someone who takes initiative rather than waiting to be told what to do.
  • Creative and/or interested in theatre, performing arts, event production, or working with children.
  • Experience or interest in teaching theater techniques or acting workshops is a plus

Previous theatre experience is an asset, but it is not required. We're much more interested in finding someone who is dependable, confident, enthusiastic, and willing to learn.

This isn't a typical "assistant" position where you're expected to stand on the sidelines and wait for instructions.

You'll have the opportunity to take ownership, build leadership experience, work with an amazing group of kids, and help bring a live theatre production from rehearsals to the stage.

There's plenty of room to bring your own ideas and creativity to the program, and you'll work closely with the Drama Director throughout the process. If you love theatre, kids, creativity, and organized chaos, you might be exactly who we're looking for!

Schedule:

This is a part-time position from September-mid January involving regular rehearsal hours, with additional production responsibilities that can often be completed on a flexible schedule. September - December you can expect to be needed anywhere from 6-10 hours per week.

Some responsibilities will have specific deadlines, but much of the production work can be completed independently and scheduled around your availability.

Show week will require additional availability: during show week (Jan 9-16) we will require you from 4:00-10:00pm each evening on the weeknights and full days on the weekends.

After this show, there is the opportunity to continue the role with our program in the spring.

Compensation:

$16/hr

Please send a resume and a cover letter telling us a little about yourself, your experience working with children and/or theatre, and why you're interested in the position to:

westmandramaministries@gmail.com

We'd love to hear from you!

We appreciate everyone who takes the time to apply. Only applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.

Work Location: Hybrid remote in Brandon, MB R7B 3Y6
